THE Melbourne Shuffle and the Hardstyle dance routine has become in-creasingly popular with young Bruneians, judging by the increasing number of youths who gather twice weekly to learn the dance.

The group who call themselves the Brunei Hardstyle Community, or BHC, have even started their own website last year. It is mainly teenagers who form the core of the BHC, although it has younger and older members as well.

The Melbourne Shuffle which is a kind of dance, started in Melbourne, hence its name. It began to gain popularity after late 1980's, evolving from using techno music to hardstyle music. This later began to be called the Hardstyle Shuffle.

As the many variations began to be placed online in YouTube, it spread to Malaysia and Brunei. "We have posted videos of our own members doing the Hardstyle dance routines on YouTube, and events, music and biodata of members on the website," said Muhd Hanif Md Shamshul, the creator of the website at www. Bruneishuffle.ning.com.

According to Muhd Hanif, the website has attracted more than 500 members from Brunei, Malaysia, Australia and even as far as Russia. The group has over 60 members in Bandar Seri Begawan itself with some as young as eight and others in the 20-25 age group. It's an exciting trend; the youngsters who call themselves by nicknames, like "Pink Lover", "Cookie Monster", or "Speeker Buii" are almost always found at the same place, by the riverside front opposite the Mall from 6pm onwards. On weekends, the gathering starts as early as 3pm. "We have breaks of course, for meals, and prayers," said Muhd Hanif.

However, so far, they have preferred to keep a low profile, and do not participate in concerts, competitions or events. This is because they feel their pastime may attract some flak from the more orthodox dance groups, he added. "Many do not see it as a proper dance routine, because it is a freestyle kind of dance. They don't recognise this form of dancing.

For us, it's a challenge to learn the styles shown by those from Australia and Japan via the internet." He added, "It's a way of expressing ourselves, and besides, for the young generation, there are not much things to do or places to go."

"Currently, we are learning the moves of the Malaysian style, which started four to five years ago," said 14-year-old Hamizan Hassan. Mohd Aiyeed Mat Ali, 16, aka "flashback" and Mohd Azri Azizan Hj Sulaiman or Azrie, 17, said they hope to make BHC a group for youths throughout Brunei. They wear black t-shirts with their words BHC emblazoned in bright green on the front and back, and caps. The idea of starting a Brunei shuffle group for teens was mooted by Azrin Safri, 15.

Besides generating interest in the shuffle, it was also a good way to exercise and work off stress, he said. Their group which is just two years old, is attracting new members all the time. The initial members are from the Kuala Belait district. They started teaching the local Brunei youth, when they came to Bandar Seri Begawan. For them, it is a good hobby, and they keep in touch via their website.

Many learnt from scratch, having watched videos of the dance from You Tube, like Mohd Waie Syafiie Hj Moksin aka Pink Lover. He demonstrated his technique of the Hardstyle and then the Melbourne Shuffle, using the fast heel-and-toe movements distinctive of the dance, with arm movements as well.

Ahmadii Hj Muhammad, 18, said there were two kinds of shuffle done by the group, the Hardstyle, which he prefers, and the Melbourne aka "old school" version of the shuffle. "Every evening more than 40 of us gather to work at our routines.

It's a good way to work off stress and exercise as well as they last for more than two hours, " he said. Besides breaking the monotony of school work or office, their new hobby is one way for them to make new friends and hang out with each other.

They plan to host a party for shufflers at Kuala Belait, on March 21, at the Swiss Hotel, from 3pm till midnight. Tickets are priced at $20 and it is open to the public.
